The Centaurea stoebe (spotted knapweed) group in Europe

Centaurea stoebe belongs to the sect. Acrolophus which comprises about 115 species. C. stoebe or better the C. stoebe group consists of several taxa of uncertain taxonomic status that are very difficult to distinguish morphologically. The C. stoebe group is distributed from central France in the West to Russia in the East and from the Baltics in the North to Northern Greece in the South. In several areas it occurrs together with species from the closely related sections Phalolepis and Willkommia.
